Role of Metatags in SEO

Megatags are vital tools in search engines optimization which can be further improved upon by including the keywords in the mega tags as each web page contains one Metatags. Metatags can act as the one tool that can help a web site in getting a good ranking with a search engines. They are a heading to any web page which most of the time contain a keyword and are used by the search engine to trace and search for a site in response to a search entry made by any user. They are usually only visible to the search engines and not to the site visitors as it doesn’t contain any new information but only serve the purpose of making the work of search engines easier and to acquaint ones site to it. A proper and appropriate Metatags can really help a web site in improving its ranking. Even if a user bookmarks a site, then also it’s the Metatags that appears in that bookmark .It is considered as the most important primary source of information by a search engine regarding a site and is also the first information that is revealed to a user when he/she enters a search query. Therefore the Metatags   relevance and popularity in searched items is highly recommended.

Metatags are of three types: Meta description tag, Meta title tag and Meta keywords. The Meta title tag is the most important tag, it can be taken as the name or heading of ones site, as it’s the Meta title tag which s used by the search engines to identify a particular site instantly. Its clickable and the easiest way to attract web traffic if the tag is perfectly written.

The web content of a site is secondary as compared to Metatags.

Some tips to create efficient and effective Metatags are: Keep the length of the Metatags small (between fifteen to twenty words; make sure its relevant to the content and contains a keyword; the Metatags should be impressive, attractive, catchy and popularly searched for; it shouldn’t contain a very repetitive keyword as that might be taken wrongly as spam; also make sure of using  a new Metatag for every page for better and enhanced search engine optimization. Its also necessary to optimize the meta description tag and meta keywords to attract more traffic and to convince the search engine of the superiority of one’s site over the competitors. Each Metatag for each page should be different and relevant to the page content. Also it’s preferred not to use the company name (in case the site is regarding some company) in the Metatag unless the company is of world ranking and very well known.

Apart from keyword, description and title meta tags  there are also two new types of Metatags which play a vital role in search engine optimization: Robots Metatag  and noODP  Metatag. Robot meta tag helps in SEO by telling  the search engine when you are unwilling for your site to be indexed. The noODP Meta tag is used to convey MSN and Google the information that a site does not want to consider the open dictionary project for its description.
