What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. This is the definition of SEO extracted from wikipedia.
Website is optimized so as to grab some portion of search engine traffic.
SEO is considered as technical part of Web marketing. This is because SEO does help in the promotion of websites while it requires some technical knowledge. At least knowledge of basic HTML is required.
Search engine traffic v/s Paid traffic :
Search Engine traffic is natural and people come to websites by themselves searching for the relevant information or for a product to purchase. Paid traffic is unnatural and people may not wish to make any purchase unless the website attracts them to buy. The conversion rate is very low for paid traffic when compared with search engine traffic.
Another point is that search engine traffic is free and paid traffic is not free.
On-page and Off-page SEO:
On-page optimization (on-page SEO) is what can be done on the pages of a website to improve the performance of those pages in the search engines for target keywords.
Off-page optimisation (off-page SEO) is what can be done off the pages of a website to maximise the performance of those pages in the search engines for target keywords related. Its nothing but building links to the pages of the website from external sources / websites (proper link building).
White hat SEO v/s Black hat SEO:
SEO techniques are broadly classified in to two categories – Black -Hat SEO techniques and White – Hat SEO techniques. A technique that is approved by search engines is a white hat technique. A technique that is not approved by search engines is a black hat technique. Just as simple as that!
Gray Hat Techniques:
The techniques those are neither white hat nor black hat are called gray hat techniques. Some of these techniques are argued either way but they may associate with some risk.
